Access to be restricted on Indiana Dunes’ Mt. Baldy

If you’re planning on hiking to the top of Mount Baldy in the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, you might want to check to see if the trail is open.

According to a recent study, hikers are killing vegetation on the huge dune, leading to erosion that is slowly shortening the dune.  The problem has been detected in other dune areas and the National Park Service is likely to take steps to reduce impact, such as restricting or even banning hiking on the tops of dunes.

  1. What a bunch of BS …Man I grew up enjoying the lake and beach access over mount baldy . My father grew up there and told me of the good times he had as a kid doing the same.
    They can doze hoosier slide to build the ugly nipsco gen plant but dont want people walking on the dunes?
    Crazy …well Im glad I got the chance to enjoy it .
